Teeth whitening

Whether their teeth have become discoloured naturally over the years, or as a result of other factors such as smoking, we know many of our patients choose cosmetic teeth whitening to restore their confidence in their smiles.

At 32 Whites Dental & Implant Clinic, Stockport, we offer two professional teeth whitening systems:

  • Home Whitening
  • In-Surgery Whitening

At-Home Teeth Whitening

This treatment option involves loading bespoke trays with the whitening gel and wearing them on your teeth overnight for 5-6 nights. At-home teeth whitening involves the use of special trays that are custom-made to fit your mouth. These hold the whitening gel in contact with your teeth surfaces to create a brighter, whiter aesthetic.

One of the biggest benefits of at-home teeth whitening is that the trays can be stored and used again (as long as there are no major changes to the shape of your teeth). On the other hand, some patients do find wearing the trays overnight slightly uncomfortable, and this can lead to temporary sensitivity.

The follow-up for our at-home teeth whitening option is essentially a ‘top up’ – you would only need to purchase more whitening gel rather than new trays.

In-Surgery Professional Teeth Whitening

The in-surgery option means the whitening procedure is carried out here at the 32 Whites Dental & Implant Clinic dental surgery in Stockport, with the addition of custom-made trays intended for use at home.

During this procedure, we’ll keep your mouth’s soft tissues (teeth and gums) protected by isolating the tooth surfaces being whitened. We’ll then apply whitening gel to your tooth surfaces and shine a special light onto the teeth. This light activates the gel, which in turn lightens and brightens your teeth. In total, we’ll carry out three 15 minute cycles, washing out and applying a fresh layer of gel for every cycle. The total whitening procedure is fairly quick, and shouldn’t take longer than an hour.

This is a popular option for our patients as the effects are instant – no overnight tray-wearing! If a single tooth is sensitive, we have the flexibility to remove the gel from that tooth alone and continue work on the rest of your smile.

Why whiten teeth?

While everyone dreams of a Hollywood smile, very few people have naturally bright, white teeth. Your teeth change colour as you get older, and other factors like what you eat and drink can affect their colour. Coffee, red wine, curry, balsamic vinegar and dark berries are all teeth staining culprits. You may have an important event coming up, such as a wedding or holiday, that you want to look your best for. It may be that your teeth have gradually become discoloured due to certain prescribed medications or antibiotics. A build up of calculus (tartar) can also lead to yellow-looking teeth, as can habits like smoking.

Your whitening consultation

Your smile is unique to you, and the dentists at 32 Whites Dental & Implant Clinic in Stockport, understand that your reasons are personal too. Our dentists will expertly assess your teeth to make sure they are suitable for a whitening treatment.

Before undergoing treatment your dentist may recommend that you see the dental hygienist to remove staining and tartar to prepare your teeth. This procedure ensures your teeth are ready to receive the whitening application and ensures the correct shade is achieved.

How long will the treatment last?

How long your teeth stay whiter and brighter after treatment is down to you. Stay away from stain-culprits and keep up a good oral health routine and the effects of your whitening treatment should last up to three years.

How you can keep a whiter, brighter smile

As well as using a whitening treatment, you can keep your smile looking fresh and bright by incorporating these five simple steps into your oral care routine:

  1. Avoid, or keep to a minimum, foods like curry and berries, and beverages such as coffee and red wine that are known to stain teeth.
  2. Have a glass of water or rinse your mouth out within thirty minutes of eating.
  3. Plaque attracts stains, so keep brushing and flossing regularly to remove any build up.
  4. Use a tooth whitening toothpaste or mouthwash.
  5. Visit your 32 Whites Dental & Implant Clinic hygienist for a scale and polish at least once or twice a year.
