What Are Dentures?
Dentures are removable restorations for missing teeth. They are usually made from a gum-coloured plastic base, with artificial teeth positioned to restore your smile and bite. They can be complete (replacing all teeth) or partial (replacing some teeth).
Having missing teeth can make you feel self-conscious about your smile, and make eating and speaking difficult. It also has a negative impact on your oral health, so it is very important to have well-fitting, aesthetically pleasing, natural looking dentures.
What Do Dentures Look Like?
Dentures today look very natural, bringing your smile to life and giving it a healthy appearance.
Teeth give structure to your cheeks, lips and face, and losing too many can make your face look older. As well as restoring your smile, dentures will improve the shape of your face, giving you a more youthful appearance. Dentures can also be attached to dental implants to give them a much greater level of stability.
What Does Denture Treatment Involve?
To begin with, we’ll invite you for an initial consultation at 32Whites. This is an informal chat so you can get to know us and discuss your dental and medical history, and let us know what you’d like to achieve from dental treatment. We’ll examine your mouth and, if necessary, carry out X-rays of your teeth.
Once you’ve decided that dentures are definitely the treatment for you, we’ll take some impressions of your teeth and record your bite to ensure your dentures will fit comfortably. Your dentures will be tried in with the replacement teeth set on a wax base.
When you’re happy with your new smile, we will secure the acrylic denture base before fitting your brand new dentures. If you have any existing signs of gum disease, we will need to treat these before your dentures are fitted; this could include extracting loose teeth if necessary. It’s important that your mouth is fully healed following this treatment before you wear your permanent dentures.
How Do You Take Care Of Dentures?
Just like natural teeth, it’s important to brush your dentures daily to remove food deposits and plaque. You can use a toothbrush or special soft-bristled denture brush using a denture cream. Conventional toothpaste is not suitable for cleaning dentures, and may abrade them and cause permanent damage.
You could also add a special denture cleaning tablet or solution to warm water and after you take them out at night, soak your dentures to remove any stains. It’s important to remove your dentures at night to give your gums a rest. It’s preferable to soak dentures in a container of cold water when you are not wearing them.
Always remember to brush any remaining natural teeth and your gums every morning and evening to keep your mouth healthy. We strongly recommend regular dental health checks to ensure your dentures still fit correctly, feel comfortable and are in good condition. Dentures may break if they are dropped, so handle them with care.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and avoid boiling water when cleaning your dentures.
