Natural teeth can discolour over the years due to natural and artificial colours in foods and drinks. Smoking and age also affects the colour of teeth.

Home teeth whitening

This comprises of custom made trays to fit an individual's teeth. The trays are snug fitting and hold the whitening gel in contact with the teeth surfaces to be whitened. The system consists of loading the trays with the whitening gel and wearing it overnight for 5-6 nights.

Advantage- the trays can be stored for reuse for a top up as long as no major changes are made to the shape or position of the teeth.

Disadvantage- wearing the trays overnight for  5-6 nights could be tedious and uncomfortable. The procedure when carried out for the first time requires about  5 or 6 applications to show significant change in shade.

Follow up- Most suitable and economical as a top up. Only whitening gel needs to be bought as the same trays can be reused.

Zoom teeth whitening

In this system the procedure is carried out in the surgery. The soft tissue (lips, gums) is protected, isolating the surfaces of teeth that are to be whitened. The whitening gel is applied on the teeth surfaces and a special light is directed onto the teeth, which activates the gel which in turn lightens and brightens the teeth. 3 cycles of 15 minutes each is carried out, washing out and applying fresh layer of gel for every cycle. The procedure in total could take up to an hour in chair.

Advantages - Instant results in an hour without having to wear the trays for 5 or 6 nights

Disadvantages- teeth could get sensitive during the procedure. If a single tooth is sensitive the gel is removed from that tooth and the procedure carried on for the others. Top up involves repeating the same procedure.

Combination - in surgery Zoom whitening with trays for future top up

This involves in surgery zoom whitening as above followed by trays made for top up as and when required.

Advantages- instant initial results in an hour without the hassle of wearing trays for 5/6 days. Custom made trays available along with, which makes it economical and convenient for top up.

None of the teeth whitening system is permanent and mild temporary sensitivity is a common side effect with all the system. Only natural teeth surface gets lighter and brighter. Fillings, crowns, bridges and any kind of restorations do not change colour. Not all teeth are suitable for whitening and a consultation with a dentist is important before any procedure.
